A Mailgun alternative for teams that change email copy often
Mailgun is a strong sending platform, and its inbound routing and validation have no equivalent here. The gap is the template layer. Basic costs $15/month and gives you no template builder at all, so getting one means Foundation at $35/month, and even then a template has no draft state: you edit the live thing. CommuniQueue starts from the workflow instead, and the sending can stay on your Mailgun account.
| Mailgun | CommuniQueue | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | Free tier at 100 emails/day. Basic is $15/mo for 10,000 emails but has no template builder. Templates start on Foundation at $35/mo for 50,000 emails, free for the first month. | $29/mo Basic (1 workspace and 10,000 email deliveries included), 7-day free trial. Bring your own provider and it is $20/mo. |
| Template versioning | Templates are a Foundation feature. Versions exist through the template API, but there is no separate draft: you edit and publish the same object. | Every template keeps an autosaving draft apart from the live version, flagged test sends, publish-goes-live, and one-click restore of any previous version as a new draft. |
| Organization | Templates are a flat list per sending domain. | Workspaces, then projects, then folders, then templates, with recipient lists inherited down the tree. |
| Sending infrastructure | Mailgun's own infrastructure, with inbound routing and email validation as first-class features. | Built-in sending, or bring your own Mailgun, SendGrid, Postmark, or Amazon SES key and keep your rates. Managed open and click tracking ships only with CommuniQueue-sent email; on your own key, engagement data appears only if you enable tracking in that account. |
| Retention and reporting | 1 day of log retention on Free and Basic, 5 days on Foundation, 30 days on Scale. | Delivery reports, suppression management, soft-bounce thresholds, and outbound webhook delivery, with retention set by plan rather than by log window. |

Choose Mailgun if
- You need inbound email routing or address validation, which CommuniQueue does not do.
- You send high volume and want deliverability tooling and dedicated IP warm-up from the same vendor.
- Your templates change rarely, so paying for Foundation to get a builder is not worth it.
Choose CommuniQueue if
- Copy changes need a deploy today, or the only person who can make them is an engineer.
- You want a draft and test-send step before anything reaches a customer.
- You already send through Mailgun and want to keep that account, with a workflow layer above it.
- You run several products or clients and want per-workspace limits and billing kept apart.
